Drilling - Would it work for Homeschooling?
By admin | February 13, 2008
If you have heard of “flylady” then you probably have heard of “drilling”. It’s when people get together on a group or message service and they encourage each other to do certain tasks.
Flylady has “cleaning” and “declutter” tasks and routines so often the drill members will pledge to do something, go do it and come back and report.
Some use Yahoo groups, some Yahoo Instant Messenger, or you could use a conference room or Skype. You do want to keep it to group members only so the conversation (and purpose) keep on track.
Drilling works well for some people and I’m wondering how it could be adapted for Homeschooling. Any thoughts - please post a comment.

Starting an Unit Study
By admin | January 21, 2008
So I finally broke down and bought a unit study. I knew this would be an adventure and it started out with my regular debit card not going through because of security. So I had to use my business card, which blows the concept of keeping business and personal expenses apart! Unless you count homeschooling as part of my business - but that’s another issue.
Doing things on the fly is my style, but if I am going to do a unit study I need to do at least some minimal prep. The study I purchased is in pdf format so I have to print out the pages I need for each day. I’m keeping them in a binder which means punching each page. I might have to go to the office store and buy larger binder combs as the ones I have only hold 20 pages. This unit study is four weeks long so I’m thinking that’s more than 20 pages total!
While printing out the pages is time and ink consuming, once they have been printed, punched and bound the tedious part is over.
We are blessed to have the laptop close so we can look at links without moving from our study area. Links are provided in the pdf but that is on another computer. Perhaps I need to work on sharing that folder so I can open it on the laptop and be able to click on links in the unit.
Having art supplies, paper, and educational resources close by help because if my kids leave the room to fetch something they might not come back!
Will keep you posted!

Yes - there will be a show this week!
By admin | December 3, 2007
Greetings all - how is your December going? We have had two Thursdays in a row with challenges that resulted in no Homeschooling Open Chat show. One was Thanksgiving and the other was a breakdown in some equipment at TalkShoe.
Join me this Thursday at 1:00 CST for a new show! Any suggestions for topics?

Fall Fiesta of Homeschooling
By admin | November 15, 2007
Greetings all - I’ve been in discussion for a while with other homeschooling families on the topic of sharing our blogs, business and websites. I’ve come up with a possible solution based on some other sharing ventures I’ve seen.
Every two (*) weeks someone hosts the Fall Fiesta at their site and others either send information to the site for it to be posted or upload where the owner says to. You may have seen this work well with the carnival of homeschooling. We would have to iron out the details as who what when and why - but brilliant minds make it easy work!
You “should” be able to post in the comments section - let me know if you can’t.
Leslie
(*)means open for discussion-options.
